Nursing Managers¡¯ Evaluation on Clinical Competence of Newly Qualified Staff Nurses

Abstract
Purpose: The aim of this study was to examine how nurse managers evaluate the clinical performance of newly qualified staff nurses.

Method: This study used a cross sectional descriptive design with a convenient sample of 194 nurse mangers from various health care settings. Data were collected from March 1 to March 30 in 2005, 2006 and 2007. The health care settings were selected for this study because they had hired at least one graduate from two different nursing programs in D city (one 4-year college nursing program; a 3-year junior college nursing program). The nursing managers were asked to evaluate the newly qualified staff nurses¡¯ clinical competence on 6 categories.

Results: The ¡¯competence of coping with emergency situations¡¯ and ¡¯competence of evaluating patient¡¯s condition¡¯ were evaluated to be most highly unsatisfied by nursing mangers although these two areas were evaluated as the most important clinical performance.

Conclusion: The findings from this study may provide an important information in enhancing a nursing school curriculum.
